in and around Sherborne
The
Abbey – dates in part from Saxon
and Norman times and was rebuilt in the 15th Century
with a magnificent fan-vaulted ceiling. The Abbey
is a resting place for Saxon nobles. The splendid
interior has the dignity of a cathedral. All our properties
are within a fine minute walk of the Abbey.
The
Alms Houses – located in the
Abbey Close are a rare example of a medieval hospital
and dates from the 13th Century. They posesses a fine
triptych, either German or Flemish.
Cheap
Street and The Conduit – Cheap
Street winds its way through the heart of Sherborne
from The Green down to The Conduit, which was originally
built as a lavatorium (or washing place) in the Abbey’s
cloisters. Cheap Street abounds in old inns and historic
houses built in the same golden stone as the Abbey.
Three of our properties are on Cheap Street.
Museum
of Local History – located in
what was the Abbey Gatehouse.
The
Old Castle – the original 12th
Century Castle was reduced to romantic and evocative
ruins in the Civil War.
The
‘New’ Castle –
adjacent to an artificial lake and set in magnificent
grounds, the New Castle was built in 1594 for Sir
Walter Raleigh and contains some magnificent furniture
and works of art.
Sherborne
School –
founded in the 15th Century the School contains
many of the original Abbey buildings. Used for the
filming of ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips’.
