Places To Visit

Founded by St. Aldhelm in AD 705, the Abbey has developed from Saxon cathedral to the worshipping heart of a monastic community, and finally, to one of the most beautiful of England’s parish churches.  For many it is still the ‘cathedral of Dorset’.  All our properties are within a five minute walk of the Abbey.

located in what was the Abbey Gatehouse in the heart of the town, Sherborne Museum is home to over 15,000 items of local history.  Apart from a few purchases, the items have all been donated by local residents, and the displays are enhanced by models, illustrations and back-drops by local artists.

Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 this has been the home of the Digby family since 1617.  Sherborne Castle is a Historic House which reflects a glorious variety of decorative styles from over 400 years of English history.  ‘Capability’ Brown created the 50-acre lake set in sweeping lawns with magnificent specimen trees in 1753 which can be enjoyed along with the Castle’s rich interiors with its splendid collections of art, furniture and porcelain.

After withstanding two sieges during the Civil War, all that remains today is the romantic and evocative ruin of the Southwest Gatehouse and parts of this 12th Century Castle, including the Great Tower and the North Range.  Families and history lovers will all enjoy a day out to Sherborne Old Castle; bring a picnic and take in the serene countryside views.
